Volunteer Highlight: Khandi, Shannador & Laura

“I want them to know that I appreciate them, along with many others – words can’t express how they’ve helped me!” – Shantell Hepburn

As FLO embarks on a journey to highlight the amazing work of volunteers and community leaders, we were truly moved by the story Shantell Hepburn shared of three selfless Bahamians that helped her through some of her life’s most challenging days.

Khandi Gibson, Shannador Andrews and Laura Johnson Taylor all represent community-based organizations in The Bahamas that are impacting lives in their communities. FLO put out a call for community members to share stories of individuals who’ve made a major difference. Hepburn told us “I can’t say that I nominate one, but these three persons are doing awesome work in their community. In 2020, I was helped by all three, when I was going through a terrible divorce, and the death of my brother, mother and child.”

She went on to say “All three persons have small organizations that can use help, but that doesn’t stop them from helping. They continue to help me, and now I can call them and refer other persons who are in need and they assist everyone. Their work has also benefitted Freeport and other islands even though their organizations may be small. I want them to know that I appreciate them, along with many others – words can’t express how they’ve helped me!”

Stories like Shantell’s remind us that the Bahamian spirit is one of giving and care. Despite the overwhelming sense of negativity that can dominate social media and the press, there are wonderful people doing amazing work every single day. If you’d like to become a volunteer and support their organizations or others, follow FLO Bahamas on all social media platforms.
